ninemillion.org in the UK

ninemillion.org launched in the UK on World Refugee Day, June 20, 2006. To promote the young refugee plight and bring awareness to ninemillion.org’s campaign, Wendy Chamberlin, Deputy High Commissioner for the UNHCR, gave in-depth interviews on Reuters and Reuters TV, AlertNet, BBC World, CNN International and Skynews.

Momentum continued to build in September on the hallowed turf of Manchester United's Old Trafford stadium, for a crunch match between Manchester United and arch rivals Arsenal. More than 75,000 soccer fans listened to a UNHCR senior external affairs officer Peter Kessler, explain the ninemillion.org campaign during a half-time interview, which was also broadcast on the home team's MUTV.

To customize fund raising efforts in the UK, SMS* texting was set up for mobile-phone service. People wishing to donate to ninemillion.org could then contribute via their mobile phones. United Kingdom cell-phone users can text the message "ninemillion" to number 84424. Each text message costs £1.65, with £1 going to help refugee children gain access to education and sport.

In November, UNHCR set up a stall at the Race Convention 2006, to brief some of the 900 delegates about the UN Refugee agencies’ work, including the ninemillion.org.

December 4, 2006, ninemillion.org joined the SLRAS at their concert in Islington, London which launched the SLRAS European Tour.

* SMS is short for Short Message Service. Similar to paging, SMS is a service for sending short text messages to mobile phones.
