Nine Million
Help them learn. Help them play. December, 2006

ninemillion.org

ninemillion.org is a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees-led campaign with corporate partners from the UNHCR Council of Business Leaders, including founding campaign partners Nike and Microsoft/MSN; plus Merck, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Manpower.

ninemillion.org, under the auspice of the UNHCR and its corporate partners, is an innovative and unprecedented public-private partnership, and among the first of its kind, to raise awareness via the web of the nine million children who are living as refugees around the world today. The ninemillion.org campaign is building powerful advocacy for these young and often helpless refugees, giving them not only a voice, but a helping hand.

Funds raised through the campaign give refugee children direct access to education and sports programs. Ordinarily, assistance given to refugees aims at reducing immediate hardship. But these children have long-term needs and often remain in refugee camps for years rather than weeks. Providing them with basic education and sport programs enables them to live healthier, stronger lives, equipping them with new skills and a renewed spirit that can help them rebuild their lives upon return to their home countries.

The ninemillion.org website (http://www.ninemillion.org) was enhanced and updated in November 2006 and now features the UNHCR RSS news link, an interactive map, several new calls to action, including online T-shirt sales, and music by the Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars.
