Council of Business Leaders

ninemillion.org is a UNHCR led campaign with corporate partners from the UNHCR Council of Business Leaders, which includes founding campaign partners Nike and Microsoft; plus Merck, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Manpower.

The Council of Business Leaders was launched during the 2005 World Economic Forum in Davos. These companies are demonstrating a commitment to social responsibility and our relationship with them is based upon long-term, results-oriented, mutually beneficial collaboration.

A first field mission to visit refugee camps in Kenya, Tanzania and Burundi was organized in March 2006 and the Council members showed great enthusiasm for UNHCR's work and commitment to refugees. The group dynamics during the mission illustrated how well companies can work side by side to make a difference in the lives of refugees. From the 1st to the 5th of May 2007, Council members visited the Tham Hin refugee camps in Thailand. Their visit was an excellent occasion to unveil the first Community Technology Access center established in Thailand with funds raised through ninemillion.org. The members of the Council were pleased by the speed of implementation and the impact this center will have for thousands of young refugees.

The example of Tham Hin refugee camp is a good illustration on how technology can enable vulnerable and deprived communities to access learning and training opportunities enabling young refugees to build a better future for themselves.
